Delivery is free on hires of three days or more within 30km of Griffith. Shorter hires and jobs further out are quoted from a $90 base plus $2.20 per km. A $500 bond applies and comes back once the gear is checked over.
300mm suits fence posts, vineyard and orchard trellis, small pier holes and tree planting — the size most jobs around here call for.
450mm is for structural pier holes under a shed, deck or carport, bigger strainer posts, and anywhere an engineer has specified a wider footing. Check your plans before you book: the hole size is usually specified, not optional.
A hand auger works fine in loose soil. Riverina clay is not loose soil. Once it dries out it sets like concrete, and a two-man petrol auger will either stall or spin you around with it.
The excavator does the pushing. You get a straight hole at a consistent depth, and you can drill a whole fence line in the time it takes to do a few by hand — and you finish the day able to use your arms.
The auger is an attachment, so it's hired on top of the excavator, not instead of it. Excavator from $195 a day, plus $70 for the 300mm or $80 for the 450mm.
Most people booking a fence line take the excavator for the day with the auger, drill the holes in the morning, then use the bucket to clean up and backfill in the afternoon. One hire, whole job.

Mark your line out first and check the hole spacing against your rail or trellis lengths. It's a lot easier to move a mark than a hole.
